1. Rachel Weisz as Tessa Quayle in The Constant Gardener: Weisz is just so great in this film! She's sad, radiant, and her presence really drives the whole film! One of the best decisions that the Academy has made.
2. Amy Adams as Ashley Johnsten in Junebug: If only there had been a tie! Adams is fantastic as Ashley, she is funny and has terrific presense, but adds layers of sadness to her character. Wonderful!
3. Michelle Williams as Alma Beers Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain: I've seen this film in bits and pieces, so I'm not sure if this rating will stay the same, but I thought that Williams was heartbreaking and very effective as Alma. She and Ledger work very well together.
4. Frances McDormand as Glory Dodge in North Country: McDormand's role in North Country is a stock role, but she does the best she can with it and both she and Theron help keep North Country from being a terrible film. Grade: two and a half stars (I don't have the star image).
5. Catherine Keener as Harper Lee in Capote: Keener is just okay as Harper Lee, but she has nothing to do except for being supportive to Phiilip Seymour Hoffman. Some good moments, but unimpressive.

I have only seen Keener, and your right she really does not do anything.
I love Amy Adams! She was easily the best thing about Junebug. I haven't seen Weisz yet but I plan to soon!
Dinasztie: My opinion on Williams might change, but I have to see the film from start to finish.
Twister: I actually really liked the film. I think it should have been nominated for Best Picture and should have won Best Adapted Screenplay.
Louis Morgan: Yeah, she is wasted. But I loved her in Being John Malkovich! Have you seen that?

I loved Keener in "Malkovich". A very unique performance, and Diaz should have gotten a nomination too.

Why only two stars for Winslet?
I did not feel she connected well with Dench to make one character, I thought Broadbent and Bonneville were far more successful with that. Also her character and performance was that of a free spirit but only a free spirit that's it. Her performance just seemed slightly hollow to me and she needed more to her than just her free spirit.
It seems as if no one likes her except for me! Well, I thought she was great and better then Dench. Is it possible for you do a 2001 Best Actress ranking?
Not really since I have only seen Dench and Spacek.
What Best Actress rankings could you do?
I hate to admit it but I have not seen all the nominees from a single year, this is because my nominee watching has focused mostly on the Best Actor and Supporting Actor categories.
Oh, okay. It's pretty much the same thing with me for the Actor categories, but I have seen all of the nominees for Best Actor 2003, so when I'm done with 2002, I'll do another Best Actress profile, and in the middle of that, I'll do that year. I've decided to always do always do a regular ranking when I'm doing a profile.
Well I look forward to seeing it, since few do the actor categories.

I'll do 1954 as soon as I can gain access to a star is born and the adventures of Robinson Crusoe, unfortunately that might be awhile.

Amy Adams was the emotional center of that ambitious little film, and boy did she do it well.
I have never felt so sorry for a character. She was so good at making the audience note the sadness that was masked by the different facades she wore.
God, each word she said was pregnant with depression/unhappiness. I wanted to cry my eyes out the whole time..especially those scenes when she's looking up to Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz).
I agree! Brilliantly layered performance! Would have been my choice in any other year.
