Hey everyone, I'm just gonna publish this now, since my links to Rabbit Hole are going too slow right now, and I'm dying to post SOMETHING. So, I've decided to, after I'm done with a couple more Best Actress years, to try to see all of the Best Supporting Actress winners and do a ranking of them, like Fritz is doing right now with the Best Picture winners and Sage has done in the past. I've decided on Best Supporting Actress because I've seen very few winners, I need to re-watch the winners I've already seen, and despite the fact it would be fun to a Best Actress ranking like this, I like doing the profiles for that category more. Which is why I'm still going to continue doing them, yes, even when I'm trying to watch all of these movies. See, I'll publish reviews of some of the winner's performances to keep things going and to give you an idea of what my ranking will be, but not all, because that would defeat the purpose of doing the ranking. So, I'll still continue with my Best Actress profiles, but I probably will try to choose years where one of the nominees or the winner is from the same film as a Supporting Actress winner.
So, here are the winners I've seen so far, though,as I said, I will rewatch them all:

Best Actress 2002: Nicole Kidman in The Hours

Nicole Kidman received her 2nd Best Actress nomination and won for playing famous author Virginia Wolf in The Hours. Virginia and her husband Leonard have just moved out of London and into the country, so Virginia won't be as moody and troubled. But Virginia feels suffocated by the peacefulness of the country and is unable to connect with the people around her. Despite wearing ridiculous makeup and wearing a fake nose, Kidman is still able to deliver a very good performance as Virginia. A big plus is her voice: It's piercing and magnetic and draws us in. Her role is a bit underwritten and I think that it leans more towards supporting, but Kidman is able to make this work in her favor, by making Virginia an enigma that we want to see and know more of. The scenes with her sister are wonderful and the train scene is brilliantly executed by Kidman and we really feel an emotional connection to Virginia. So, a very good performance that is a bit underwhelming, but works overall, which gets

Best Actress 2002: Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven

Julianne Moore received her 5th Oscar nomination for playing Cathy Whitaker, a suburban housewife of the 50's in Far From Heaven. Unlike Moore's Laura Brown in The Hours, Cathy starts out very happy. She loves her husband and children and loves taking care of them. But then she finds her husband and another man kissing and she starts having feelings for her African-American gardener which stirs gossip and unrest in the town society. This performance has to be one of the greatest of all time. Moore is so wonderful in capturing Cathy's love for her children and her husband and she completely carries Far From Heaven. The film is a great one (and was robbed of Best Picture and Directing nominations), but without Moore, it would be nothing. The scenes with her best friend Eleanor (Patricia Clarkson) are great and it's so sad what happens to their friendship at the end. Moore is just incredible with Dennis Haysbert, who plays the man she falls in love with. You really can get the sense that she, despite her love for her family, wants something more and wants to be with this man. It's very deep, subtle work and so devastating. That look at the train station is one of the best close ups ever. So heartbreaking. If you haven't seen this performance, see it now. Julianne Moore gives one of the most layered, heartbreaking, and beautiful performances of all time which gets

Best Actress 2002
I decided to do 2002 next instead of 2007 since I think it's a more interesting year. And PLEASE comment on last year's resolution. It hurts my feelings when I get zero comments. So the nominees were:
Salma Hayek in Frida
Nicole Kidman in The Hours
Diane Lane in Unfaithful
Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven
Renee Zellweger in Chicago
So, who will my pick? Who are you rooting for?

Best Actress 2002: Diane Lane in Unfaithful

Diane Lane received her first Oscar nomination for playing Constance Summer in Unfaithful. Connie is happily married to Edward (Richard Gere, who he and Lane are always paired up together for some reason) and has a son. On a very windy day in the city, she has a bad fall and hurts her knee and a handsome stranger invites her into his apartment so he can get her patched up. Connie is entranced by him and she vistit's his apartment several times after that until she begins to an affair with him. Her husband who is suspicious, has a man follow her. Once he finds out, there are grave consequences. Diane Lane delivers a fantastic performance that drives the whole film. She doesn't have a lot of showy moments, but she expresses her emotions on her face and you can always feel an emotional undercurrent beneath her performance. She also deserves credit for making the script believable because we have to believe that Connie would choose to have an affair, even though she loves her husband very much and that it hurts her to lie to him. She also makes us understand Connie's emotions and to care about her. And that train scene! One of the best acted scenes ever, if you ask me. It's filled with such raw emotion and Lane plays it perfectly. A great , performance that elevates the film completely which gets
Best Actress 2002: Renee Zellweger in Chicago

Renee Zellweger received her 2nd Oscar nomination for playing Roxie Hart, a woman who shoots her boyfriend because he lied to her about having an act at a nightclub. After she goes to jail, she gets a lawyer (Richard Gere) who has never lost a case. Roxie then becomes a celebrity due to her case and plans to become a singer after she gets off. First of all, this is one of my all time favorite films. It was the film that got me interested in musicals and even movies in general. And Zellweger gives her best performance in it, in my opinion. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Roxie and Zellweger nails it. She captures Roxie's thirst for fame, her childlike personalty, and adds a lot of vulnerability and sprit to Roxie. And I was rooting for her all the way. Sure, Roxie is a manipulative liar and criminal, but Zellweger makes us love her. She has a great singing voice and "Roxie" is just a knockout! Zellweger carries Chicago from start to finish with a tour de force performance that gets

5. Salma Hayek in Frida: Salma Hayek's performance does not save Frida from being a bad film and doesn't feel like the real Frida Kahlo at all, but a hollywoodized caricature.

4. Nicole Kidman in The Hours: Despite being a little underwhelming, Kidman delivers a piercing performance that makes Virginia Wolf a fascinating enigma.
3. Diane Lane in Unfaithful: Diane Lane gives a great, intimate performance that dominates the entire film and makes it worth watching.
2. Renee Zellweger in Chicago: Zellweger carries Chicago with a fantastic performance which shows Roxie's manipulative ways and her vulnerability.
1. Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven: Julianne Moore is amazing as Cathy and gives a heart wrenching , brilliant performance for the ages.

Best Actress 2002: Salma Hayek in Frida

Salma Hayek received her 1st Oscar nomination for playing famous artist Frida Kahlo in Frida. The film is about her relationship with her husband and how her constant physicals pains (Which mostly came from a bus accident when she was a child) affect both her life and relationship. First of all, Frida is a terrible film, in my opinion. It doesn't delve deep enough into their relationship or their career's as artists. I also find it to be badly directed. Salma Hayek is unable to save this. Her performance felt like an imitation of Frida Kahlo, and even worse then that, a failed one, since I never the Frida Kahlo that I pictured her as. Instead, I saw a hollywoodized, caricature that is very one note. That said, there are some good moments in this performance. Her early scenes are actually quite good and the scene when her husband is asking her to remarry him is a very well done scene by her. But can this save the rest of the performance? No. So, overall a failed performance in an awful film which gets

Best Supporting Actress Analysis
I've decided to have an Analysis of sorts of each of the Oscar winners in the top 8 categories. Lets start with Best Supporting Actress. 2000: Marcia Gay Harden as Lee Krasner in Pollock: A fierce, masterful performance. Have no problem with her winning, although I think that Frances Mcdormand should have won for Almost Famous. 2001: Jennifer Connelly as Alicia Nash in A Beautiful Mind: Awful. Just awful. 2002: Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly in Chicago: This is my opinion, but I just love this performance. I felt that she clearly deserved her Oscar. 2003: Renee Zellweger as Ruby Thewes in Cold Mountain: Ugh. What a bad performance. Zellweger delivered great, Oscar-worthy performances in Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicago, but the Academy decided to give her an Oscar for an over the top, mediocre effort in a flawed movie. 2004: Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator: Entertaining and wonderful characterization of Katharine Hepburn. But Virginia Madsen (Sideways) is my pick. 2005: Rachel Weisz as Tessa Quayle in The Constant Gardener: Beautifully layered, brilliant performance. A deserved win, although Amy Adams was great too. 2006: Jennifer Hudson as Effie White in Dreamgirls: Is there anything else that hasn't been said before? Just terrible. 2007: Tilda Swinton as Karen Crowder in Michael Clayton: Terrific, superb performance. 2008: Penelope Cruz as Maria Elena in Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Cruz brings plenty of fire and life to her film and delivers a strong performance, but Tomei (The Wrestler), Adams (Doubt),and Davis (also from Doubt) were all superior to her performance. I will post my Best Picture Analysis soon. Comment!

Best Supporting Actress 2002
1. Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly in Chicago: I know she has her share of haters, but Zeta-Jones forever left her mark on me in Chicago, which is one of my Top five favorite films. She has an electric presence whenever she performs and I think she nails Velma's selfishness and sadness underneath her confident persona.
2. Meryl Streep as Susan Orlean in Adaptation: Meryl Streep gives a unique, perfectly done performance which is very memorable. It's a little hard to describe given that it's so weird, but Streep is no doubt wonderful.
3. Julianne Moore as Laura Brown in The Hours: Although I don't think it come close to the brilliance of her work in Far From Heaven and Boogie Nights, Moore still excels in this film. She perfectly shows Laura's frustration and sadness living in her situation and we feel for her. There's a few shaky moments, but her last scene is magnificent.
4. Queen Latifah as Matron Mama Morton in Chicago: The role of Mama is a small one, but in my opinion, not underwritten. Meaning that it isn't a thin role, just one that doesn't have a lot of screentime, and Latifah does a great job with it. She's perfectly cast and she makes Mama a three dimensional character. Great voice too!
5. Kathy Bates as Roberta in About Schmit: Bates is very funny and she does add some air to the film. But unlike Latifah, her role is too underwritten. We get moments of bitterness from her, but they're never developed enough and Bates isn't able to rise above the underwritten material.
I know I did this category a few months ago, but if you can remember, you can see my thoughts and ranking have changed somewhat due to rewatching some of them and changing my mind. Overall, I'd say that this wasn't a great year for this category, nor was it a bad one. I loved Catherine, and I liked some of the other nominees a lot, but I don't think they were amazing. But who would be your pick and what are your thoughts on this lineup?

Thoughts on double nominees (Supporting Actress nominees from the same film) Part 2
1994: Jenniffer Tilly in Bullets Over Broadway and Diane Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway. I thought Wiest was good, but I agree with Fritz when he said that she is playing a stock role. Or I mean that at times she came across as an imitation of a diva, like Norma Desmond. But she surpasses this in the end and adds a lot to the film. However, I loved Jennifer Tilly's performance! She was hysterical and is hands down the best thing in Bullets Over Broadway! So, Tilly is my choice so far.
2000: Kate Hudson in Almost Famous and Frances Mcdormand in Almost Famous: Mcdormand was very funny, and touching as well. I loved every moment she was onscreen! Hudson was radiant, very fun to watch, and also adds depth to Penny. I'm going to say Mcdormand.
2001: Helen Mirren in Gosford Park and Maggie Smith in Gosford Park: I just rewatched Gosford Park today and Mirren really impressed me. Very subtle, and layered performance, which is executed perfectly. Smith was very funny, but a bit underwhelming. I didn't mind her character is basically just a snob and that's it, but I wish there was more. Still, I liked her. I think that Mirren is better, but my vote goes to Marisa Tomei in In The Bedroom, followed by Kate Winslet in Iris.
2002: Queen Latifah in Chicago and Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago: You should all know about my love for Zeta-Jones and how I think she's one of the best winners. I thought she really nailed it! But I also liked Latifah too. Her role is underwritten, but I felt she made it complete and was a lot of fun. Perhaps if they hadn't edited "Class" out of the final film then she would have gotten more praise.
2006: Adrianna Barraza in Babel and Rinko Kikuchi in Babel: I just did my 2006 ranking, but I'll just go over them again. Kikuchi was superb and Barazza was moving and very earthy.
2008: Amy Adams in Doubt and Viola Davis in Doubt: Sure, Adams played a similar role to her role in Junebug, but I thought she approached her role in Doubt differently and delivered a fantastic performance which was the best in Doubt. Davis was great as well. As I've said before, it's not a cameo but a major part in the film. Both the role and performance enrichen and add depth to the film. And Davis is gutwrenching. So, I felt Adams was superior, but I would have gone with Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler.
2009: Vera Farmiga in Up In The Air and Anna Kendrick in Up In The Air: Now, this is confusing for me. The first time I saw Up In The Air, I thought Farmiga was better and I thought Kendrick was good. But the second time, I was a bit underwhelmed by Farmiga and I really liked Kendrick. Now, looking back on it, Farmiga was great and Kendrick was too. I should see it again, but now Kendrick is ahead of Farmiga. But Monique, of course, is my choice.
