Best Actor 2003

1. Bill Murray as Bob Harris in Lost In Translation: Bill Murray delivers a subtle, sad, and funny performance that completely carries the movie. I couldn't see any acting in it and this performance really works.

2. Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow: Depp completely makes Pirates Of the Carriabean and is very effective and funny. Could have been a complete failure, but I thought he nailed it.

3. Jude Law as Inman in Cold Mountain: Law is very subtle and natural and carries the emotional weight of Cold Mountain. The only good performance in the film.

4. Sean Penn as Jimmy Markum in Mystic River: Penn is very good and heartbreaking and is a big asset to Mystic River. He hams it up a little in some scenes, but it is still a good performance.

5. Ben Kingsley as Behrani in House Of Sand And Fog: Ben Kingsley is quite good, but he's a little stiff at times. His last scenes though are great. http://us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f50123%5fAFKniGIAAG8OS8PHDgLY4ifSRxk&pid=2.6&fid=Inbox&inline=1
I couldn't find a nominee picture for all of them that would fit. But what did you think of this lineup? Who would your choice be?

I sort of like Bill Murray's performance, in some ways...Penn is my pick though...can't stand him normally, but he was great in Mystic River.

Interesting ratings, glad to see someone else doing an Actor rating. I will withhold my precise thoughts on the nominees, but your right about Penn Hamming it.

Sage: What did you think of Lost In Translation as a whole? Did you like it?

Louis Morgan: Yeah, during the "Is that my daughter in there?!" scene, I thought he overdid it. And yeah, my first Best Actor ranking! What year will you do next after 89?

Little too quirky for me.

Bill Murray was fantastic in that movie!

Jude Law was good.

Sean Penn was good too, though I have mixed reactions to it.

Did you think that Penn overdid it? And glad that you like Murray!

Louis Morgan said...

Not sure what year I'll do next.

joe burns said...

Do 2005 next!

Louis Morgan said...

I would but I can only really do the ones that I compiled on my list.

I'll give you links if you want! I'll try to find some right now, and then I'll get back to you. Wait, what films from that year do you not have access to?

Louis Morgan said...

I was planning to do a year from another decade that I haven't done yet. I'll get to 2005 sooner than later.

joe burns said...

Hmm, then do 1968 then!

I liked all of them, but Law is probably my least favorite, but I need to watch "Cold Mountain" again.

joe burns said...

At first, he was my least favorite too, but my ranking completely changed while I was writing it. Off-topic, but who are your Best Actress picks for the 2000's?

Malcolm said...

joe burns: There are some scenes where he's loud. Now those are his accomplishments. But, oh.... he is ot consistent. And he was not able to save his film which (surprisingly) find boring but still well-executed.

I saw Lost in Translation only once but I really hated it.

joe burns said...

Why Fritz?

Fritz said...

It was so terribly slow; I don't mind slow movies but this was one seemed so...pointless and I couldn't care less about the two main characters.

Bill Murray - 5 stars
Sean Penn, Jude Law and Ben Kingsley - 4 stars
Johnny Depp - 3 and a half stars

Overall, it was a very decent set of nominees, although i'm unsure which Penn performance I prefer from that year.

Burning Reels: I thought it was a great lineup! I'm glad to see your back!

Hi!

I admire you posts.

I wonder if you want to join in a smackdown I’m going to officiate. It’s between the nominees for Best Picture last 2008. I hope you reply for confirmation whether you’ll join or you’ll decide not to.

By the way, here is my e-mail add: mylastoscar@gmail.com

Thanks and have a good day.

this lineup is still a mystery to me. I find it very hard to choose between Murray, Penn and Johnny. Very different performances, but all great. Kingsley's acting is solid, but I think Law is category filler.

Really not a big fan of Johnny Depp. His acting always seems so over-the-top. I admit that what he does he does well, but I find it very difficult to take him seriously as an actor. Not my type of performance at all.
