10. Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare In Love: 2/5 (Need to re-watch her performance though)

9. Kathy Bates in Misery: 2/5

8. Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets: 3/5

7. Emma Thompson in Howard's End: 4/5

6. Frances Mcdormand in Fargo: 4, 5/5

5. Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry: 4,5/5

4. Jessica Lange in Blue Sky: 4, 5/5

3. Jodie Foster in The Silence Of The Lambs: 5/5

Surprised Bates is so low...McDormand is the weakest of the decade for me.

As you know, I liked Mcdormand, but I'm looking forward to seeing Watson's performance, since she gets so much praise. Here's my thoughts on Bates: I don't think she was bad, but she went too over the top and came across as too campy. And, although I'm in the minority, what is so Oscar-worthy about it?

I think that's the good thing about it, and I thought she stayed where she needed too with the over the top character.

Interesting! How would you rank the Best Supporting Actress winners from the 2000's? And which do you think is the best decade for Best Supporting Actress?

Going back to Bates' performance, I can see what you are saying Joe.

Although she nicely balances the comedy and the horror of such a role, there are moments that feel off and maybe that could have been Reiners fault.

Maybe it's how Annie's written, but I wanted my sides and depths of her.

I like Gwyneth fine in Shakespeare in Love.

I know everyone hates Paltrow and with good reason, I think. But for me, Helen Hunt is, without a doubt, one of the worst performances to ever garner an Oscar. I remember being so upset that Judi Dench lost for Mrs Brown.

I adore Kathy Bates. Her southern twang never fails to entice me.

Fritz: I'm looking forward to Jennifer Jones especially from the 40's Best Actress winners. I'll do the 40's once I finish the 70's. But I'm taking a break right now.

Twister: I think she did a good job in establishing her character, but it felt too campy for me. Glad to see someone else agrees!

Andrew: Well, I should see S.I.L again, so I'm not sure about this.

Nigel: Do agree with her win?

Sage: But Monique will be your number one if she wins right?

Billy: I think that Hunt was nomination worthy, but I would have picked Carter. Dench was excellent too though. Probably would have won in any other year.

Helen Hunt deserved her nomination, just not the win.

Oh yeah, for Mo Mo.

Aww, I liked Kathy Bates. She scared the crap out of me in that movie, LOL!

My #1 would be Hilary Swank, though. There's a lot of performances on here that I haven't even seen!

joe burns said...

What performances haven't you seen yet?

Sara919 said...

I haven't seen Thompson's, Lange's, or Hunter's and it's been a very long time since I've seen Foster's or Sarandon's.

Of Course I agree with Kathy Bates' win. That role needed her. I'm sure even Stephen King would concur.

Sara919: I recommend you see The Piano first. Hunter is remarkable. I also recommend that you see Dead Man Walking again. Sarandon really blew me away.

Nigel: I agree that she's well cast, but it just didn't hit home for me.
