2009 Best Supporting Actress ranking

1. Monique as Mary Jones in Precious: Wow, what a performance! Monique delivers a powerful, incredibly realistic performance that humanizes a cruel, unsympathetic character. Not sure what else to say. Simply amazing!

2. Anna Kendrick as Natalie Keener in Up In The Air: Kendrick is perfectly cast in the role of Natalie Keener, an uptight, neurotic young woman who discovers more about herself and about life. She's funny, annoying, and all around great!

3. Vera Farmiga as Alex Goran in Up In The Air: The second time I saw Up In The Air, I was little underwhelmed by this performance, but it's still good. She adds a lot to the film and has great chemistry with George Clooney. Brilliant monolgue scene as well.

4. Penelope Cruz as Carla in Nine: The best performance in the entire film! I love Penelope and she steals every scene she's in. Perhaps a nomination is too much, but still wonderful.

5. Maggie as Jean Craddock in Crazy Heart: I'm happy that she came out of nowhere and got a nomination, but this felt off to me. Her role is a stock role and at times she feels to abrupt, but I give her credit for being very natural and having great chemistry with Jeff Bridges.

What are your thoughts?

It truly has been a good year for this category.

Really no contest.

Mo'Nique.

Nigel: Hmm, I think Monique and the Up In The Air girls were great, but I think they're have been better lineups. Still, pretty good.

Sage: Agreed. There are years when one contender dominates a category and that is Monique.

Well, it's not even that she's the frontrunner. It's that she's on a whole other level from the other ones.

That's what I meant, lol. But I liked both of the Up In The Air girls, but the other nominees are just okay. I'll do Best Actress once I see The Last Station.

I think I might wait until the day before the Oscars to do that one.

No Competition for Monique here. The merits speak for themselves. But I have this small lil hunch that she might (BIG might) just get knocked out by Maggie.

It's the Eddie Murphy curse all over again. He was championed all season, won all (most?) precursors and then lost Oscar Night.

Maggie's nom didn't just come out of nowhere after all---Votes came in...Who Knows?

Either way Monique should win this.

Nigel: Well, Murphy was more of a solid bet then a sure thing. Plus, the winner was Alan Arkin, who had a lot of sentiment behind him which Maggie doesn't have.

I guess. Good Point.

She sure does have that sentiment.
Her best scene is when she comes rushing in to speak to the mall-security.

I love how she unleashes her maternal instincts as she yells "Don't Touch Me!"---Her emotions are so true and imbued with conviction.

I believed her. I felt her (temporary) loss plus her brewing rage against Bad.
