Most overrated films and performances:

I know Twister published a post like this, but I wanted to make my own because I feel that these films and performances are incredibly overrated. Singing In The Rain: When I read the part of Sage's worst to best Supporting Actress review when she said that Singing In the Rain is perhaps the most overrated movie of all time, I completely agreed with what she said. It's a fun, entertaining musical, but is it the greatest movie musical of all time? The 10th best film ever made? No! Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose: A excellent performance and my 2nd choice for Best Actress that year, but Cotillard's performance is WAY overpraised. She was called by one youtube user as one of the top 5 best Best Actress winners of all time and she is actually number 2 on a "greatest performances of all time" video. Cotillard doesn't even come close these descriptions and another reason I have a problem with this win is because it fits right in to the academy's love of honoring biopic performances. Not to say all the actors who won for real people performances weren't deserving, but I get sick of actors always winning for playing real people and Cotillard is a prime example of that. Casablanca: You'll probably want to tie me up, shoot me, and throw me of a bridge for this, but I didn't find this film to be that great. Yes, it has a good script, but I think that this movie is quite dated. I also think that the reason why it is so loved is because it was one of the first films to combine so many genre's sucesfully (drama, romance, mystery, war film, ect). Please comment and tell me if you agree or disagree with my choices.

I disagree with just about every word. Except instead of shooting you, I'd prefer to give you a pair of cement shoes. "Singing in the Rain" is not my favorite musical, but I think it's worthy of the AFI's and other's honors. What musical is your favorite - which would you like to see remembered as the greatest American musical of all time?

Also I do think Marion deserved to win; she was fantastic, and this film did a good job to give me some insight into Edith Piaf's life.

My favorite movie musical of all time is (gulp) Chicago. I know that most people hate it, but I love it and I think that it deserved Best Picture. I also like Cabaret, The Sound Of Music, and West Side Story a lot too and I think that they're all better then Singing In The Rain. As for Marion, I liked her performance and she carried her AWFUL film on her shoulders, but I think it is over-rated because of the reasons I stated in my post.

Chicago is my favorite musical too! And one of my top 3 films. The other 2 musicals I LOVE are West Side Story and Moulin Rouge!

I love Moulin Rouge too! And I'm glad to see that somebody else thinks Chicago is the best movie musical.

My favorite musical is Hedwig and The Angry Inch :D

I agree with every word you said. Casablanca is probably my vote for the most overated. And Pulp Fiction is perhaps the most pretinous.

Finally somebody else agrees with me about Casablanca! Haven't seen Hedwig though.

I think Cotillard gave a very strong performance in La Vie en Rose, but I agree that it probably wasn't worthy of the praise it got. Certainly an admirable performance, but not "greatest of all-time" worthy. I really think Ellen Page should have won for Juno.

I totally agree! Page was great as Juno.
