An Education review

After seeing An Education yesterday,I can say that the film was very good. Incomplete (for reasons that I can't say due to spoiler alert),but a strong movie none the less. Of course, the main reason I saw it was for Carey Mulligan's performance, which has been getting a lot of awards attention lately. But after seeing it,I can't honestly say that she's worthy of all the buzz she's been getting. Her performance was a strong one and probably nomination worthy, but win caliber? I don't think so. That said, everyone has gone gaga over her and she'll probably be nominated, but I think she'll need to be a sure thing to win. Anyone have any thoughts on this film or the Best Actress race this year?

So she's not worthy of a win?

I still think she will have the edge come Oscar season.

Yes,I didn't feel that her performance is worthy of a win. But I would give her nomination. I also think that she's the frontrunner right now, but either Meryl Streep or Gabourey Sidibe could surprise. I know that you were blown away by Monique, but was Sidibe also good?

Sidibe was great! But I doubt they will give her the win since this is her first acting performance.

In my opinion, both Sidibe and Mo'Nique should win. Mulligan deserves a nomination without a doubt, but Sidibe's performances is so much more layered and emotionally powerful. And in the supporting actress category, I don't think anyone will be able to compete with Mo'Nique's stunning performance.

I agree. After seeing Precious, both Sidibe annd Monique are my picks for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at this point.

Still waiting to see this. Danny, don't you think Sidibe's performance seemed more layered and emotionally powerful because of the heroism of the character?

Remember that scene when she discusses sex with David (Sarsgaad) for the first time?

She gives him a long, expressive stare..one which reveals the innocence and curiosity that drives her...You also see her eyes tearing a bit, revealing her vulnerability and fear of the unknown.....(which in this case is sexual relations).

That scene alone had me convinced.

And of course her passionate monologue as she confronted the teacher (Williams) is another reason why she is "worthy." (imo)
