Open Thread and a little note

Given none of you commented on the first post, I've decided to try to do another open thread, which is when anybody can talk about anything you want to, and I want a really long one! Discuss, debate, ask questions! ! And I'm asking you to PLEASE, PLEASE comment on this one! Look, I'm really sorry that I haven't been able to be very active on this blog for nearly a year now, and the reason is that I have so much to do, give being in school, and being involved in drama at my high school. It's a demanding commitment, and frankly, we all have our own lives to live as well as doing this blog. The reason why I wanted/want to an open thread is to get the feeling of excitement back into blogging again and having an engaging conversation on here about anything you want, as long as it's not too personal. So, please join in! And I promise that during the summer, I'll be more committed to blogging. And I'm still planning on doing a Best Supporting Actress project, so that will be what I'm doing in the summer, which isn't that far away!

Joe, I will make a suggestion, that you should try to come with a topic first.

I'll suggest a topic. :) If you like it, then we go for it.

We all know the line up for the Best Picture - Musical or Comedy of the GG this year gained notoriety and infamy for having a ridiculous line up.

So, what will be your line up for that category last year if you are going to pick them?

I hope this could help. :)

OK, I'll ask a question. Have you seen a Hungarian movie? If you have, which one? If not, are you interested (should I recommend some)?

Hmm, it"s an interesting question, I think I"d still nominate. Burlesque, and maybe The Kids Are All Right, but I have to review who the nominees were first.

No, I haven"t! You should reccomend some!

And Louis, maybe I should have done that, but I just thought it would be more fun to talk about anything you want.

How about (we can tackle multiple topics) the 2002 Oscar race ( for the year 2002, not the one that took place in 02)?who did you think would win and who are your favorites now?

2002 was a great year for every major category besides probably Best Actress. (I didn't even love Moore as much as everyone else seemed to.)

I LOOOOOVE that the Academy chose Chicago as Best Picture, one of my favorite choices ever. People hate on it so unnecessarily. Brody and Cooper are both great winners, and I don't mind the Zeta-Jones win as much as others. She killed it.

1. On the top of my head: Mephisto (1981, our only Oscar winner to date), Father (1966), Love (1971), The Lark/The Drama of the Lark (1963, the best), The Fifth Seal (1976, my #2), Diary for my Children (1984), Round-up (1966).

2. 2002 is a year I don't really like. Julianne should have won Actress (though Lane was close), Meryl or Julianne Supporting over the weak CZJ, the Actor Oscars went to the right people. I loved Polanski's win. And I HAAAAATE that Chicago won BP over The Pianist, which is a far superior movie to that glittery Fosse imitation (and a bad one at that) and everyting else that year. It's really a scandal and a shame that The Pianist didn't win.

I think it was a really strong year in general for film, and I don't mind Kidman's win TOO much, still, I feel Juianne was robbed and Far From Heaven was cheated out of Best Picture and Best Director win. Brody and Cooper are worthy winners, but Cooper is a bit over rated. He's still great though, as is that whole movie. Glad you like Zeta-Jones too, Derek! And I love that Chicago won as well!

I think the Pianist is a great film too, but I just prefer Chicago, and I don't think it was copied from Bob Fosse..

I don't understand calling Chicago a Fosse imitation, considering the original show was choreographed by him, and when I think of Fosse Chicago jumps straight to mind. There is supposed to be a bit of Fosse in the film, and I think they modernized it as best they could.

Best Actress 2002 is tough for me. Moore is quite good, but I'd almost go with Streep for The Hours or even Zellweger for an interesting different type of performance that I enjoyed. Kidman was fine, but kind of unspectacular.

Supporting Actress probably should have been Meryl, as much as I love Zeta-Jones.

Oh, and I've learned that I hate Daniel Day-Lewis only recently but his performance in Gangs of New York was atrocious.

joe burns said...

i've heard mixed thoughts about Day-Lewis and my Dad hates the film so I've always had a strange bias against it, ha ha.

And I agree about Fosse, there is some Fosse in there, but nearly all of it is modern and Marshall!

I love Streep too, but Catherine is one of my favorite winners ever..

What are your thoughts on the 2005 oscar race?

dinasztie said...

Joe, to be fran almost all of the years of the past decade were awful. 2007 was interesting. 2010 was a good sign.

dinasztie said...

At the time I was actually rooting for Felicity because DH was such a hot new show.

And somehow I felt that Crash would win.

joe burns said...

I don't agree, I think 2006 and 2001 and 2002 were strong years as was 2008 and 2007. I think there are great movies every year although there are weak years like 09 for example.

As for 05, I hadn't seen too many of the nominated films, but I was rooting for Crash..

Hey Joe and company, I just realized I hadn't been over here in a while! Like Joe I'm in high school (with only a little less than 2 weeks remaining before graduation!) and it sucks and keeps me off here.

But for a semi-random topic, anyone here a fan of the "Scream" movie series?

Malcolm said...

I want to watch the first Scream, actually. Is it really that terrifying and gory? :)

Brandon said...

Oh yeah, it's very violent and scary but very fun. It's never boring at all, because between the violence the pop dialouge is still fresh and hilarious. It's also one of the coolest movies ever. The sequels are a little bit lesser but still amazing!

Twister: No, I haven't, I'm not really into horror...

Hey Joe! Sorry for being so late!

Okay, a question: What musicals have you seen on the stage?

I wonder what you think about this song: she's a Hungarian singer, but the song is in English (80%). There's really much debate about this song in Europe. :) Many think she should have won Eurovision.

joe burns said...

Oh, great question Fritz! I've seen Wicked and Spring Awakening on Broadway, and Chicago, Cabaret, Hairspray, and Cats on stage over the hill from where I live.

dinasztie said...

I sent a new link to the video.

How did you like it (if you have seen it)?

joe burns said...

Yeah, I just listened to it! It was pretty good, though I wish I could have heard it in hungarian though. It's called "What About My Dreams" right?

The same video, in Hungarian. :)

okay. i have a question.

which film(s) should have receive 2 or more acting nominations in the same category? like...

Best Supporting Actress:
Paula Patton and Mo'Nique in Precious

Best Actor:
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption

and who else?

joe burns said...

I have not seen The Shawshank Redemption, but I don't feel Patton deserved an oscar nomination for her work. It's good, but somewhat phony.

I wish Julianne had gotten a nomination for A Single Man, she did a fantastic job, I'm glad Firth got nominated though. He should have won.
